Deploying a VM from Service Catalog

This article explains the below steps on how to create a request from a service/blueprint/catalog in vRealize Automation:

  • Request a Service

  • Track Your Request

  • Examine Your Deployment

  • Destroy Your Deployment

Request a Service:

  • You request a Ubuntu OS virtual machine from the vRealize Automation Service Catalog

  • Login to your vRA portal https://vra.fqdn.local

    • Username: configadmin

    • Password: Password

  • Click Service Broker

  • On the Catalog tab, click REQUEST against the Ubuntu item

This service catalog includes services that vRealize Automation administrators offer to users.

Ubuntu is a service that you request as a user

  • Enter Ubuntu-Test1 as the deployment name

  • Click SUBMIT

Track Your Request:

You track the requested service under the Deployments tab.

  • Click Cloud Assembly

  • Click on Resources

  • On the Deployments tab, click Ubuntu-Test1

  • Click the History tab

The History tab provides the status of the virtual machine deployment states.

  • Login to your vCenter https://vcsa.fqdn.local

  • In the Recent Tasks pane, track the progress of the Ubuntu OS virtual machine as it is cloned, customized, and powered on

  • Return to the vRealize Automation Console tab

Wait for the provisioning to finish. This step might take up to 2 minutes.

Do not close the deployment after it finishes

Examine Your Deployment:

Your virtual machine is an item in vRealize Automation. After a request is complete, you have a new item in your console.

  • Click the Topology tab

  • Select Cloud_vSphere_Machine_1 on the topology tab

  • Expand the General section and record the IP address of this virtual machine

  • Expand the Custom properties section and record the image used to deploy this virtual machine

  • Click CLOSE

Destroy Your Deployment:

You use vRealize Automation to destroy your virtual machine. When an item is not needed, you can destroy it. Destroying unneeded items saves resources.

  • Click the vertical ellipsis icon next to the PhotonOS-Lab1 deployment

  • Click Delete

  • Click SUBMIT

  • Track the request to destroy your virtual machine in the vSphere Client and in the vRealize Automation services console

  • When your virtual machine is powered off and deleted, log out from the top-right corner
